Mad To Be Normal To Screen As Part Of Inclusive ReelAbilities Film Festival In New York

David Tennant's award-winning performance as R.D Laing in Mad To Be Normal will be one of the treats on offer at this year's ReelAbilities Film Festival in New York. The festival, now in its 10th year, promotes inclusion and authentic portrayals in cinema of people with disabilities.

Mad To Be Normal stars David Tennant in the acclaimed movie based on the life of maverick Glasgow psychiatrist Laing, with particular focus on the medication-free facility he set up at Kingsley Hall in East London. There, people experiencing mental illness and their medical practitioners lived together as equals and were encouraged to work through their psychosis. The film also stars Elisabeth Moss, Michael Gambon and Gabriel Byrne and was written and directed by Robert Mullan.

The Reel Abilities New York Film Festival runs between March 8-14 at the Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan and accessible venues throughout New York City, Long Island, Westchester and Rockland Counties. The opens with the autism rom-com Keep The Change and closes with Matan Yair's Scaffolding, a very personal account of a young man’s struggle with anger management issues and ADD. The opening gala also includes a presentation to honour Marlee Matlin, who won an Oscar for her performance in the 1986 movie Children Of A Lesser God. The festival will also offer audio description for all of its feature films.
