Archive Footage Of David Tennant As The Tenth Doctor Shown In Doctor Who Tonight (CONTAINS SPOILERS)

Archive footage of David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor and Catherine Tate as Donna Noble was shown in tonight's episode of Doctor Who. The series 9 episode, The Girl Who Died, starred Peter Capaldi as the Doctor and Jenna Coleman as Clara Oswald with Game Of Thrones star Maisie Williams in the role of Viking Ashildr. David's appearance added an unexpected twist to the episode's conclusion.

A summary follows. Therefore anyone who hasn't yet seen the episode and who doesn't want to be spoiled may want to stop reading here.

The episode saw the Doctor and Clara captured by Viking warriors and taken to their village in chains, only for the village to come under attack by a race of warlike aliens called the Mire. The Doctor attempts to train the surviving villagers - mainly farmers and fishermen - in the art of battle, but eventually comes up with an ingenious plan to see the enemy off without bloodshed. However, the cost is the life of the imaginative and courageous Ashildr, and her death is something that the Doctor cannot accept. But as he rants against the injustice of it, he catches his own reflection in a barrel of water.

When Peter Capaldi was first cast, fans were desperate to know how the series would deal with his first appearance in the series, as Caecilius. Steven Moffat has been teasing a resolution of this for some time, and the time has at last come. The reflection of his own face reminded The Doctor of when he first saw it: in Pompeii. He flashed back to his Tenth self, in the TARDIS as Donna Noble begs him to save Caecilius and his family from the exploding Vesuvius, and the Doctor bent the rules of a fixed event to comply.

"I know where I got this face and I know what it's for. To remind me, to hold me to the mark. I'm the Doctor and I save people!" the Doctor stated, and bent the rules once again to bring Ashildr back from the dead.

What the consequences of his actions might be remains to be seen.

The episode is now available to view again for 30 days via BBC iPlayer.
