David Tennant: Potential Breakout Star For US TV

Starpulse in the USA have tapped David Tennant as one of their eight potential breakout stars on American TV this season. David is heading up the cast of Gracepoint, the new ten part crime drama from Fox which premieres on Thursday. Although David has a certain cult following in the USA already he is mainly known through his work in Doctor Who and the Harry Potter franchise. The time is ripe, they say, for American audiences to catch up with what fans in the UK know already.

David Tennant
Gracepoint (FOX) - Premieres Thursday 2nd October, 9pm/8c
We're not saying that nobody knows who David Tennant is. However, try naming something he's done outside of Doctor Who. Many people can't, and that's a shame. He's one of the best actors to have come out of the United Kingdom in a long time, maybe ever (see: Blackpool, his performance of HamletRecovery and of course, the original Broadchurch). Gracepoint is Tennant's first starring role in an American TV production, and a chance for network television audiences to see how talented he is on a weekly basis. In fact, the show's kind of an embarrassment of riches, between Tennant, writer Chris Chibnall (Law & Order: UK, Camelot) and a post-Breaking Bad Anna Gunn. Tennant ought to be known by the entire small-screen audience, not just the folks who watch BBC America or remember his supporting role in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.  There's no reason he shouldn't be as big a star in the US as he is in the UK.

Gracepoint is based on the UK drama phenomenon Broadchurch in which David also starred as DI Alec Hardy, one of the detectives leading the hunt for the killer of a schoolboy in a small seaside town. In Gracepoint, with the action transferred to the Californian coast, he plays Hardy's American counterpart, Det. Emmett Carver, with Anna Gunn filling the role of Ellie Miller. Gracepoint viewers are promised that the series will remain true in tension and quality to the original - indeed, original series creator Chris Chibnall is among the executive producers - but will have its own plot twists and a different ending. Nick Nolte, Jacki Weaver, Michael Peña, Virginia Kull and Kevin Zegers are also among the ensemble cast.
